Speck Products GeoMetric TPU Case For iPhone 4

This iPhone 4 case has been out for a while but it’s so cool looking I thought I would post about it. The shapes on the back of the case are very unique, you just don’t see that design anywhere else. It also reflects the light in different directions which is also very cool. If you’re looking for a hip iPhone 4 case then I would recommend the GeoMetric for iPhone 4 from Speck Products.

iPad 2.0 Coming Q2 2011 According to Goldman Sachs

As the tablet market heats up with the introduction of the PlayBook from BlackBerry, Apple is keeping busy with their next generation iPad, scheduled to come out in the 2nd quarter, next year. Goldman’s predictions are in line with reports from ComputerWorld that suppliers are lining up for the new device. They also anticipate will have a 9.7 inch display and be thinner with a built-in camera and a mini USB connection.

Apple sold over 3 million iPads in the first 80 days following the product’s April release. Production has reportedly now ramped-up to three million units per month.

Eco-Friendly Products & Packaging From Marware

I give Marware a lot of credit for being green in their manufacturing and packaging process. As you can see below, they have 3 products that fit the bill. I don’t see any other manufacturer of iPhone cases doing this so I think this is a big deal.

From Marware’s Web site:

Eco-Leather: This is a more environmentally friendly material than traditional leather. The primary difference lies in the chemicals used (or rather NOT used) in the tanning process. Traditionally, harmful chemicals such as lye, chromic sulfate, and chromium VI are used. This causes the creation of sulfuric acid as a runoff, which leaches into the ground, the water supply, and eventually the ocean. It also leaves behind toxic residue on the finished leather, which may cause harmful reactions in humans. Traditional tanning methods also release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which vaporize into the atmosphere and can contribute to greenhouse gases or allergy-like reactions in humans. All our leather is RoHS compliant (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). What this means is that the tanning process produces far less harmful runoff and the use of chemicals is extremely limited. Whenever possible, vegetable based tanning is our preferred process. Our latest tests performed on 16 March 2009 reported 0% (none detected) Chromium VI detected in our Eco-Leather.

Corn-Polymers: For a high quality leather-like look and feel, some of our cases use Daewoo Eco-Kite as an alternative to premium leather. Essentially, cornstarch is removed from corn, polymerized with TPA (terephthalate acid), which means smaller molecules react together to produce large macromolecules and formed into pellets. These pellets are then spun into fibers. Once the fibers are treated and dyed, they can be used with fabrics for anything from upholstery to carpeting. We use vegetable dye to replicate the look and texture of real leather. With this material, we are able to replace leather with a renewable, less toxic alternative.

Eco-Prene: This fabric is virtually identical to conventional neoprene, with calcium carbonate (limestone) and recycled PET plastic fibers used in place of petroleum. This significantly reduces the amount of petroleum-based waste and minimizes dependence on oil and oil based products. It also prevents the release of chlorine, which is a byproduct of using petroleum to make neoprene.

China Unicom Struggling to Meet Demand for iPhone 4

Apparently the Apple iPhone 4 is selling well in China. According to the Wall Street Journal, China Unicom, the #2 wireless carrier, sold up to 240,000 iPhones yesterday with a total of 200,000 pre-orders and 40,000 in store purchases. Conversely, the iPhone 3GS sold a mere 5,000 units during the first weekend and climbed slowly to 100,000 units after six weeks.

While the 240,000 figure may seem comparatively low (Apple sold 1.5 million in one day in the US), these figures are from China Unicom sales only. It does not take into account the number of handsets purchased directly from Apple, nor those iPhones obtained thorough China’s lucrative grey market, an off-the-record number that you must include if you want an accurate representation of China’s demand for the iPhone 4.

China Unicom did not provide details on the upcoming supply of the iPhone 4, but Apple promised it was working hard to get handsets into China as soon as possible. This is good news for Apple, the iPhone’s popularity in China has propelled the smartphone vendor to the #5 spot in the Asian country, an impressive position for a handset that has been on sale for less than a year in the world’s largest mobile phone market.
